Although Red Fly Studio’s Star Wars game was axed, Borth made it clear during the Q&A that the studio is doing all it can to revive the Darth Maul title. He also elaborated that in order to do so, developers would need to create strong conceptual designs in order to impress Electronic Arts higher-ups who wield the decision as to whether or not it gets green-lit once more, saying:

Due to the Darth Maul project being so early in development, Borth didn’t exactly have concrete examples as to what the game’s aesthetics would resemble, much less what the fighting system would be like. Be that as it may, he did touch on of the fact that developers studied the atmosphere and Freeflow combat of Rocksteady Studio’s Batman: Arkham series for inspiration, as Electronic Arts’ CEO Andrew Wilson mentioned in the past. Regarding the matter, Borth said, “Hopefully EA will see the value in us reskinning our combat mechanic to be more in line with what they are thinking for Star Wars if they are not interested in Maul.”

Due to his mystique, Darth Maul was one of the more compelling characters to come out of the prequels to the original Star Wars trilogy. Giving fans an in-depth exploration of his story could work well, and pick up where The Force Unleashed left off as far as utilizing a protagonist who leans more toward the Dark Side is concerned. However, with Episode VII: The Force Awakens hitting theaters soon, it’s possible that future Star Wars games—Battlefront excluded—might focus on the burgeoning lore of the sci-fi universe instead of revisiting older ideas.

While it’s unclear as to when or if the Darth Maul title will ever see the light of day, or for which platforms it would be developed, at least Star Wars fans have Star Wars Battlefront to look forward to on November 17, 2015 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
