But what is Peloton Guide, how does it work, and what is the role it plays in the overall Peloton home fitness experience?
What Is the Peloton Guide?
The Peloton Guide is the newest—and most affordable—addition to Peloton’s home fitness empire. With a camera system that plugs straight into a TV, a heart rate band, and remote control, the Peloton Guide works with a user’s existing equipment to create a unique strength training experience.
Relying primarily on its machine learning-enabled camera system, the Peloton Guide solves a unique problem that plagues the remote strength training experience: getting injured due to bad form.
How the Peloton Guide Works
Using machine learning, the Peloton Guide can identify patterns and make decisions to enhance the user experience. Using “Self Mode,” the Guide uses the built-in camera to track user progress and movements.
While there’s still no real substitute for an instructor telling you what you’re doing wrong in person, Peloton offers an alternative solution. With the Peloton Guide, your workout can show up on the screen next to the virtual instructor, so you can quickly identify if you are doing movements correctly (or incorrectly).
While the Guide is still more expensive than its competitors like the recently launched Tempo Move, it doesn’t need a smartphone to function. Although, unlike the Tempo Move which is preloaded with weights, Peloton Guide users will still need to purchase additional equipment.
The Guide’s Role in the Peloton Ecosystem
Peloton Guide owners will need a $12.99 per month membership to make use of the device. But existing Peloton users will be happy to know that it will already be included in its $39 monthly All-Access Membership subscription.
With the Peloton Guide, existing users can effectively cross-train between their existing Peloton bikes and treadmills without ever downloading a new app or making a new account. In addition, the Guide will likely make it easy to finally schedule a Peloton workout with your cardio-averse friends.
The Peloton Guide’s $495 price tag is a whopping $1,000 less than the price of its cheapest bike. With this, the Guide may be the perfect offer for many customers to have the Peloton experience for the first time.
